Graffiti Echoing Within the Walls / 内壁で反響するグラフィティ | Bethlehem, Palestine
Bethlehem. A city reached through a one-way iron gate.
No sooner had I stepped into this Palestinian city, enclosed by an eight-meter concrete wall, than I was hit by tear gas, likely fired by the Israeli military.
A hotel porter screaming to get inside. Ambulance sirens tearing through the air. Eyes burning, I was guided to The Walled Off Hotel, "the hotel with the worst view in the world."
What a check-in. I knew this was a conflict zone. Still, the reality was beyond anything I had imagined.
In the battered streets, children played around open fires. Food was scarce. Work was scarce. Pilgrim tour buses moved silently past it all.
And yet, the graffiti on the wall was changing the landscape.
A man there said: "Banksy saved our souls."
Not politics, not weapons, art saves people. Standing inside these walls, I understood that for the first time.
