The Sacred in Nature/聖なる自然の中へ | Kyoto, Japan

Before being enshrined at Ise Jingu, Amaterasu is said to have descended upon this land.
That presence still drifts through this forest.

Japan's sacred sites are not defined by architecture or iconography, but by the natural environment itself. Moss-covered rocks, fallen trees decaying in the forest, a small shrine perched on a cliff above a ravine. In what decays and in what grows, the divine resides.

Since ancient times, nature itself has turned people inward.
